Hi all,

Could someone please suggest a way of ripping my DVDs into iTunes in both an iPad and Apple TV format.

What is the best software to do this for windows?

Thanks
AC

Try Handbrake.

You'll see in the Handbrake Guide website under "Sources", that Handbrake requires certain files from VLC player in order to transcode and get around copy-protected DVDs. So make sure you have VLC player installed too.

You can rip directly from Handbrake (although Handbrake recommends to copy DVD Video_TS folder to hard drive then use handbrake).

In Handbrake, select the ATV2 preset for ATV and iPads.

I use a Mac but this should probably be the same on a PC. Good luck.

Another good tool for DVD ripping is DVD Fab.

I would suggest using a tool to Rip several DVD's (should only take about 15 min each),the ripped DVD will result in a Video TS folder. Then use the que in Handbrake and dump about 10 of them into Handbrake and let it encode over night.

You can use the ATV2 preset and the resulting file will play on both the ipad and the ATV2.

I have done over 600 DVD's like this and it works very well.

The only thing i would add is, if the DVD has subtitles on foreign language parts (movies like Star-Wars and The DaVinci Code have these) that you use the Subtitles tab and chose the "foreign audio search" drop down. I failed to do this and ended up having to re-encode several DVD's

I have tried dvdfab and handbreak on Inglorious Basterds to great success. However, I have been un able to get the subtitles to work using handbreak.

How can I go about this using the foreign audio search of handbreak?

Thanks

If you are just talking about the subtitles that show up during the foreign language parts, then:

Use the Apple TV2 preset, click the Subtitles tab, then on the drop-down choose foreign audio search, by default Forced Only and Burned in will be clicked by default.

ripping dvds /VCL player

"So make sure you have VLC player installed too."

What is this? By the way, why doesn't APPLE have a free software so that ripping purchased DVDs can be enjoyed on the various players?

Thanks.

Will the ATV2 setting on Handbrake work on ATV1 & iPAD 1 also? I have both these devices around the house along with the ATV2 and looking for a universal setting?

Because the manufacture and development of software that can be used to decrypt DVDs is illegal in the United State.

Most DVDs are encrypted to "prevent" (quotation marks because the "protection" is a complete joke) them being copied. They have to be decrypted in order to be converted in to a format for Apple devices.

They also probably prefer it if you bought movies from the iTunes store, too.
