Today I was going to do some data backups and to my surprise none of my CD/DVD burning programs in XP had my DVD Drive selectable. So I go to "My Computer" and what do you know? There is no CD/DVD section and my drive is nowhere to be found. I go check device manager, the DVD drive has a ! next to it and this is what it had to say.

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

Clicking on the troubleshooter asks me if I meant to uninstall the device, which I did not want to do. The troubleshooter says that it can't help me since I wasn't trying to uninstall it. Great.

I then read about the latest bootcamp driver download and since I wouldn't have to use a disc to use it I downloaded it, double-clicked on the file and...it won't work. It never pops up, never gets anywhere let alone installs anything. So that's no help either.

The only thing I can think of that this would be related to would be my install of the BlueSoleil bluetooth program/drivers. I have a feeling it may have uninstalled my drives along with the bluetooth device.

Suggestions?

Usually this is caused by a program or device driver that overwrites or changes a setting in the registry.

From memory - ??? Do a registry search for "Upper Filters" and "Lower Filters". When you find the statement, delete it from the registry and reboot. Your CD drive should show up again.

You may be able to do a Google search or search the MSKB for a similar repair. It's been a long time since I've seen that error. Don't you love Windows?

When you click the installer for boot camp, you need to wait. It can take 5-10 minutes before anything happens.

Uninstall the DVD drive. What's the worst that can happen? You can't use it? You're at that point now. Uninstall it, restart, and it should be auto-detected.
