Why is the DVD drive SO SLOW on my 24" imac...

It takes forever to copy anything from a dvd, cd to my HD.

Thought it would be much faster than this for a 8X....

Could it be defective...

Seems like it copies a 5GB file at around 5mb/sec.

What was the DVD recorded at... I do not think that a 1x DVD can play at 8x... but not sure...

Have you actually measured the speed that it read at? Maybe it is not slow at all. a 1X CD dive (should one exist) would take exactly 80 minutes to read an entire CDROM. An 8X drive should be able to read an entire CD in 10 minutes. Same for DVD. A 1X drive will read the data from a one hour movie in one hour. a 2x drive can read it in 1/2 the time and so on.

How fast is your drive

That doesn't sound too bad. The speeds given for an optical drive are always the maximum achieveable, which is going to depend on the quality of the disk, and also which part of it you are reading. Since you are getting at least 4x speed, I wouldn't worry too much.

it is a 24" iMac... whatever is in there...

Is there a utility to test the speed?
