DVD not recognised

Hi all,

I have had a new imac for 6 weeks now and for the first time wanted to watch a DVD on it - so I put a standard commercial movie DVD in the slot and the machine started the DVD player app but said "supported disc not available". The disc did not show up on the desktop or in finder and when I use the disc utility program it shows the disc with the title but will not let me take an image of the disc.

I have tried a number of different DVDs with no success.

What do I have to do to fix this?

Oh yes - it does recognise data DVDs as it will mount the apple OSX install disc.
