DVD Player and "NOT PERMITTED"

The Apple DVD Player seems to be having lots of problems with many of the DVD movies I've tried watching lately. DVD Player frequently says "NOT PERMITTED" to any of the following:
Fast Forward and Rewind, Chapter skip, Menu, Play, and even Stop.

The most annoying thing lately is to be watching a movie when it suddenly locks up near the end of a chapter. If I try to resume, I get the "NOT PERMITTED" message and a system message saying that the DVD Player has "Unexpectedly Quit". I just tried watching a DVD and the DVD Player won't even start - "NOT PERMITTED" is displayed when Play is pressed. Some movies can be playing through DVD Player and the software will skip several chapters foward or backward. If I try to return to the correct chapter, the software crashes. Where's the option to ignore all MPAA restrictions and just play the movie?

There was another thread about this yesterday, but no solution was found (only an alternative). I'd try the following if you haven't already:

1. Repair permissions in Disk Utility.
2. Delete the file located at [your home folder]/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist.
3. Try VLC instead (as suggested on the other thread).

There's a more serious problem that occurs while trying to watch other movies that use some kind of weird encoding. If I let the beginning of the movie play normally, a series of green lines appear horizontally all over the DVD Player window. Restarting the player and playing a different movie doesn't get rid of those green lines. I have to log out of OS X to fix it. If I fast forward past the beginning few minutes or start on the second chapter, the lines don't appear. What is the MPAA doing to my computer?

But it's not just the Mac that has a problem playing some new DVD movies. On a Sony DVD player:
User: "Captions on"
DVD: "This operation currently prohibited by disc."
User: "Pause"
DVD: "This operation currently prohibited by disc."
User: "Menu"
DVD: "This operation currently prohibited by disc."


Sometimes a DVD locks up and refuses to continue until the power is turned off and the unit is reset.
