I just look at a site called wormintheapple.com for a patch for my dvd drive's firmware. There is none listed for my 17" powerbook... anyone have any suggestions?

DVD-region

I guess I never realized there is a region set in the DVD firmware. I am headed abroad for one year this coming friday and now I am concerned that I am not going to be able to play DVD's from that area. I can't see that a region is put in something like a 17" PB. Anyhow, there are programs you can get that will take off the region such as DVDBackup but you have to put the entire image onto your HD which is a bit time consuming. DVD2oneX will do the same. Now I am worried. And what about output to a TV is there an easy way to switch to PAL or do you even need to worry about that?

Try

http://www.videolan.org - VLC

supposedly, it will play DVD's from any region. Here's another thread on this topic:

VLC tends to play DVDs really badly (on my G3 anyway). You really need a firmware patch to get them going properly. Sorry to hear that there isn't one available for your drive yet.

It's very frustrating for me, as here in NZ they sell DVDs from multiple regions, as all DVD players can play all regions. However I bought my iBook from the US and it is therefore region protected and I had to apply the patch. Speaking of the patch, it says that if it gets interrupted it can destroy your drive. So I start the patch, and when it finished, it came up with a big red stop sign or something, which made me think it had failed and killed my drive. But no, it had worked successfully, but whoever wrote the patch had decided to use a big red "fail" icon just to scare people.
