Hi everyone, I know it is 2019 and I am asking for dvd rip software. i have some old tv shows on dvd and would like to rip them and move them to my plex setup. I tried Handbrand Makemkv so far and some disks are not converting to mp4 properly. If you use any paid dvd rip software, please suggest one with your comments.
 
I used Handbrake to rip over 1200 DVD's and only had a few problems. I tried a couple of the paid programs on those, and they couldn't do them either. However, it used to be simpler to install the library that is used to read copy protected DVD's. I can still boot into MacOS 10.8.5 to rip commercial DVD's with Handbrake and that works fine. But on Sierra, it refuses to rip a copy protected disk.

Do a Google search for "handbrake libdvdcss" to find ways around this.

Yes, like I said, I can boot my 2012 quad mini into 10.8.5, and that's what I used to rip all my DVD's. Do the Google search I suggested if you want to use it on newer MacOS versions. I started looking into that a couple years ago and decided it wasn't worth the effort, since I could just use my existing Mountain Lion setup.
 
Thanks for all the suggestions. Handbrake is good when dvd is in good condition. But it is failing for some really old dvds. I will try macx dvd ripper.

That's what I do as well. 1500 rips and growing! DVD, Bluray and UHD. No problem.

That's an issue with the disc and/or reader you're using. Not the software. Some drives can handle scratched up discs better than others.

I am using samsung drive. Can you recommend any other good one?
 
I've used Mac DVDRipper Pro for many years. Outstanding program that has worked on everything. Just used it a couple times this week. It's a paid program, but has a 5 instance free trial that you should look into. Highly recommend it.
 
I found my 2018 mac mini with plex server just couldn’t sync the sound with video on older dvds when I used Handbrake to rip into either mkv or mp4.

It's not just scratched disks that are the problem. Most DVDs start to deteriorate after several years and become unreadable - I have read that 10 years is pushing it. Blurays last for much longer (e.g. 20 years - when there will be no Bluray devices to read them with!). Best convert as much as you can now. I doubt if there is a "best drive" for reading deteriorated disks - it is just pot luck that the technology works for a particular DVD. See if you can access a couple of other drives to try and recover important DVDs.
