Hi,

About to start ripping my DVD collection and set it up in iTunes.

What quality settings are best for use with the ATV or does it matter?

Also would like to maintain at least 5.1 audio.

Thanks,

Chris

I have been using Handbrake with a 50% CBR for animation and 60% for live action stuff. If it a show that I really like that looks really pretty - like Firefly - then I will encode at a higher CBR of 65%.

Best thing to do is to encode at a bitrate that you think will be OK, then test it out. If it looks good to you, then it is the right bitrate. If not, jack it up a bit.

BTW, if you aren't going to use MetaX to tag your files, you are really missiing out on a real gem of software.

I've heard about MetaX and plan to use it also. I have an Escient system setup now and really like the artwork and info, I want to keep that look with the new setup.

Thanks

I recommend starting with the "Apple TV" pre-set and making modifications as needed.

Michael

I have a 50" and 45" LCD TV at this time. Will 50-65% CBR be alright with those. What happens if you create the mp4 at 100% CBR? Is there any advantage?

Thanks

No, there's really no advantage to using 100% quality. All you're really doing is going to end up with a huge file. I suggest starting with 65% and move up from there if you think you need to.

Michael

TO be more specific, in general 70% is considered "transparent" to dvd quality. Anything over that is a total waste of bitrate and file size.
