I have a rev A 12" Powerbook. Inserted a DVD in and DVD player didn't open up as usual. Tried ejecting it, and got the 'eject' symbol on the screen but nothing happened. Restarted. Now when I open up DVD PLayer it says 'serious error. a valid dvd drive can't be found (70012)

Any ideas? Some way I can manually eject the disc?

Thanks.

if you have an external mouse reboot and hold down the mouse button that works for my mini when it has gotten stuck.

No external mouse. Would this work with a trackpad?

Trackpad, yes.

Now... Why did apple remove the manual eject used in the TiBooks? This is something I dread, as sh*t happens...

So I restart holding the trackpad button down? At what point do I press the button? After the bong sound?

This is a seriously bad design. It's a mechanical system that is surely bound to fail. There should have been some kind of a manual eject system. My IBm Thinkpad used to have a little hole that you could put a pin into to eject the drive.

OK, let me try the restart. Fingers crossed ...

Nope, didn't do it. To clarify, there isn't even a 'disc' icon on the main desktop.

THis frigging sucks. Any other ideas?

I got this from the APPLE support site

The drive doesn't eject discs

If the drive ejects discs slowly or appears to be struggling, insert and eject a disc several times.
If the drive does not eject discs, press the F12 key or, on original PowerBook G4 computers, the manual eject button located on the side of the slot. Holding down the trackpad button during startup should also eject a disc.
If the disc still does not eject, update the optical drive's firmware. This step may not be needed for all computers.
Reset the parameter RAM (PRAM) and/or the Power Manager (PMU.)
If the disc still does not eject, contact Apple to arrange for service.

I tried the F12 thing. No go. It just beeps at me. There is no manual eject. Holding down the trackpad didn't work. And I'm scared to try the other stuff. :(

Ideas ...

Is that RAM/PMU thing safe to try?

OK. This is new. I did a complete shut down. Then started up holding down the trackpad. Id didn't eject but there is now a disc icon on the desktop. Should I try ejecting by dragging it to the trash or try opening DVD player?

When you boot, hold down cmd+option+O+F and when you get to the command line type 'eject cd' hit enter then macboot or 'mac boot' (it tells you which one on the top of the screen)

OK, I didn't have to do that. I dragged the disc icon to the trash can and it came out. Whew. I guess, now I'm wondering if I can put another DVD in or if I'll have the same problem. Does this happen often? Like a one time stuck DVD. Or does it mean it's a bad drive?

I used to have it happen with my PB (12" 1.33 SD) a few times out of a hundred, a couple of times with my 1Ghz iMac too, but I think that was when I was using Panther. I haven't had the problem in a while. Yeah put another DVD in, I think it's more a software problem (OSX) than a hardware issue (just guessing though). If it doesn't eject just do the command line thing on start up, worked like a charm for me.

Good luck
