Hi, I'm new to macs and am not really sure what software to use. I have a 12" Rev B powerbook and I want to be able to take some of my DVD's and convert them to divX to store on my hard drive. I don't have a superdrive so I just want to store them on my hard drive to watch. I am not sure what software to use to do this. If you know how to do this, please let me know what software you use, and how to do it. Also, are there any programs that allow you to convert WMV. What are you able to do with WMV on a Mac. Any help would be appreciated.

DVD to divX Please Help???

I use a program called 0SEx to create disk images of DVDs that can be played on the computer. I think there's also a couple of other programs that do the same thing, but this one works and it's free. You can get it from:

To create the image, choose "DVD Image" as the format, which will create a .img file. Once finished, double click the file to mount it, and then open DVD Player (or whatever DVD player you use) and it will be automatically played.
I'm not sure about WMV programs. Windows Media Player is available for Mac (ironically), you can get it at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/software/Macintosh/osx/default.aspx, but I try to stay away from Microsoft things.

i have heard nothing but good things (though i've never used it) about handbrake
you may have to use dvdbackup (find it on versiontracker) to decrypt and copy the dvd's contents to your hard drive first...
beware converting a dvd, especially to a highly compressed format such as divx, is an "overnight" process. it is highly processor intensive and time consuming...

handbrake is good.
i use that. it's simple and free but works. choose the destination size, sound quality, pic quality etc, redefine the limits (so take out black of sides if there is) .. i'm happy with handbrake so i have no urge for the other (paid) options. Try handbrake first and see if you like.
