DVD to iPad - Match made in HELL

Handbrake + VLC Player
Have both downloaded, and use Handbrake. It's the best developed program on the Mac.
Is search broken? Just wondering b/c this question comes up every day. Time for a sticky for iPad FAQ maybe?
DVD43 circumvents any copy protection. Have it open as you convert the DVD, works like a charm

I just searched and found a whole mound of contrasting recommendations settings wise, I think that shall be my next task, to set about finding a good preset for quick decent iPad conversion!

I have decided to have a second crack at digitising my entire DVD collection.
I had dreams about it before but it still seems like a mammoth task, but it would be an amazing feat if I could do it!
No way my MacBook Air is up to that challenge so I think I will fork out for a decent spec PC that can live under the stairs just churning out DVD after DVD.
QUESTION: If i use the PS3 preset (as most of it will be used via the PS3) will it also copy over onto the iPad as I think the preset uses H.264?

PS3 has difficuly with Handbrake conversions. I haven't been able to get one to work with the video "jerky".
I've had no problems getting handbrake encoded videos to run flawlessly (a single video file for all) on the PS3, PSP, PSP Go, iPod, iPad, and Zune devices.
I did this over the past couple of years (I have about 300+ DVDs and I did a couple a night - but not every night). I bypassed "free" and bought an ElGato Turbo.264. Well worth it.
X2. I rip the DVD using MakeMKV, finding that this is the most consistent program for successfully ripping regular and BluRay DVD's. I then use Handbrake to convert. They work well on the IPad but jerk and shutter, no matter which setting I use, on the PS3. This is using a mediaserver from my PC or a NAS drive.
I converted just about all of my DVD library to iTunes using Handbrake and it took a LONG time. I think I only had about 80 to 100 DVDs. When I say long time I mean it took close to 2 months of encoding 2 to 3 movies a night while I slept. And of course I'd forget a night here and there which made it even longer.
The beauty of the ElGato is that it takes 1/2 to 1/3 the actual length of the video to encode. So a 2-hr movie will encode in 40-60 minutes. And you can queue up multiple items for encoding and even assign a different format to each (via individual drop-down menus). When I first got my iPad I wanted to shave down the filesizes of my movies so I re-encoded about 50 of them overnight (12 hours total). It pays for itself over time.
I use the stock "iPhone & iPod Touch" settings and occasionally the "Universal" setting. I'm using Handbrake 0.9.4.
It is important to note that when playing those videos on my PS3, I put them on an external 1TB USB harddrive directly attached to the PS3... I don't play them via a network connection to a PC.
I previously had DVD2iPhone (I think that's what it was called - $$) and the conversion was much less time but the quality was poor if I wanted to view it on a TV. The great thing about the universal setting in handbrake is that the picture quality remains excellent across a TV, iPad, iPhone, AppleTV, and Touch. The file sizes are larger but no picture quality suffers between devices. I needed a more universal solution to accommodate all outputs.
My original goal was to eliminate the DVD media in my house.
I don't know what type of system you are getting those encoding times, but on my Macbook Pro (last year's model- lowend CPU), a 90 minute movie takes less than 15 minutes to encode using Handbrake.
I'm usually a fan of Handbrake, but even using the developer's recommended settings, the results on the iPad are disappointing. The low volume issue, much discussed here and elsewhere being the most egregious example.
