Hi All,

I'm about to investigate if I can negotiate with myself (hard hard...) to "invest" in a DX10 card for my MacPro (Using Vista and some nice DX10 games) but I'm curious.

It's the 8800 Nvidia card that kind'a the only DX10 card available that gives nice performance compared to my 1900XT stock MacPro card. But will OSX find that card at all? Has someone tried?

What DX10 games are out that really take advantage of the new capabilities? I'm aware of only a small handful. I think it will be a year or more before you start seeing anything where DX10 really makes a huge difference.

Not in OS X, no DX10 software, anyway.

At present, there are exactly *ZERO* programs that use the extra features of DirectX 10. All games out there are DirectX 9 games. Yes, eventually there will be ones that use the extra features, but it is irrelevant for now.

But, the GeForce 8800 GTX (and now Ultra) are the fastest gaming cards out there, bar none.

There are presently a handful of DirectX 10-capable cards, all are based on the same architecture from nVidia. They are the GeForce 8x00 series. From the low-end 8300 GT (sold to big OEMs like Dell only,) to the new, $850 wonder, 8800 Ultra.

But, as Apple doesn't ship any computers with any of those cards, I can guarantee that OS X doesn't (in the present public builds, anyway; it is possible that internal betas do) support it. Not to mention that most retail video cards lack EFI firmware, so OS X wouldn't even see the card.

But... People have successfully run Windows-only video cards in Windows on a Mac Pro. So if you just want it for gaming in Windows (via Boot Camp,) go for it. But it will be a nightmare to get it to play happy with OS X. (i.e. You'll likely need to put the Windows-only card in one of the slower PCI Express slots, and leave an Apple-shipped card in the main graphics slot.)

That's probably what i'll end up doing if there is no mac DX10 card by the time Crysis comes out. but Crysis keeps getting pushed back more and more, so maybe that will actually be realized, doubtful, but maybe.

That is corret. ATM. there are few titles, like BF2142, Microsoft Flight Simulator X, Eve Online (patch).

But we are all waiting on Crysis, Alan Wake, UT 3 etc..

i hadn't ever heard 2142 can take advantage of it. Guess it doesn't matter much since you can get great frame rates with the 1900 available on the mac pro.
