I am not a Developer, otherwise I would make this myself, but I would kill for a good D20 Dice roller App with good dice rolling graphics (similar to Motion-X Poker) and a nice interface. The current dice roller apps SUCK!

This would easily be work $9.99 to me and I am sure MANY others.

Gets (to warrant a $9.99 cost)

1- Good 3d animation (similar to Motion-X Poker)
2- All standard D20 system dice available (d4,d6,d8,d10,d12,d20 and percentile)
3- Ability to choose # and type of dice via a simple interface
4- On screen rolling of dice with display showing rolls and sum of dice
5- Ability to add a "modifier" to the sum
6- Ability to save "Profiles" which include type and qty of dice and any modifiers (ex. Standard Attack, Damage from GreatSword) etc...

THIS WOULD BE A KILLER APP FOR ANY GAMER!!

Please please please please please :)

I see a D20 dice roller app there today.

It's called "D20 Gaming Dice Set"

The webpage for the app is here. However, it looks like the pictures of the dice are from the updated version which the author submitted but which hasn't made it into the store yet.

That app sucks. Boring UI and no animations. Looks like something I would have written on my Commodore 64.

I agree, the current one has no frills. I mean I always want a high tech device to do the rolling and the figuring of hits and all when I play pencil and paper games. Hmm. Actually that sounds more like a video game now! It basically replaces your dice bag. I button for each thing you'd roll. It's be nice to be able to do a little more. Like roll 30d6 at one tap, but no less or more convenient than real dice.

I'm with you, jasonnorm. I don't mind the current die rollers, but I'd pay 10 bucks for a good one like you describe.

Yes, leveraging the existing iPhone technology (such as the accelerometer) just adds that much "finish" and "value" to the app.

I actually think I might pay $15 for something that truly rocked!

Sigh, if only I new Objective C, Cocoa and had the artistic skills to design a nice UI and dice animation.. LOL

Oh well, what is the saying? Those that can't do .... buy! ... LOL

Sweet! I sent an email to the Motion X Poker guys to ask about an RPG roller. I heard back that they've had a bunch of similar requests. They already have all the dice build, they're just working on functionality to support various games. Which mean at some point (no timeline was given), we'll have a Motion X quality d20 dice roller app!

There's certainly room for more elaborate apps for the pen and paper crowd. My personal distaste for the current bunch led me to develop DieRoller, though I honestly stepped the other direction. When I think of a die rolling application, it's a utility, not a game, and not a piece of entertainment. Animations, sounds, etc. would all get in the way of what I wanted: easy to roll dice, clear output, no fuss. Understandably, everyone's opinions differ, and no doubt for those of you here who are interested in those features, my app would be inadequate.

That said, I'd take what you're requesting a step further, but not for a die rolling utility. I'd like a character sheet manager with built in die rolling. Each stat, item, saving throw etc. would know how many of what dice and what modifiers to apply. If you're GMing, the ability for multiple sheets that you can flick through like you can your photo libraries to get between NPCs quickly would rock. I'd still personally lose any fluff like animations, sounds, accelerometer usage, etc. If I want to see and hear dice, and shake my hands, I'd just use real dice, frankly. The transition to a digital utility should not be to mimic the analog version, but to be a good digital utility.

I don't agree with you on the lack of dice animations, but I agree here. I'd love to be able to use my iPhone for my character sheet. Unfortunately, the odds of someone creating a full-featured sheet that I'd like is slim. I have a custom sheet made in FileMaker Pro. I'd LOVE to be able to view/edit that sheet on my iPhone, but I doubt very much that a FileMaker reader will ever come out for the iPhone.

However, an app with a GOOD initiative tracker, exp calculator, etc. would be quite nice.

Ah, but doesn't FileMaker now have better web components? You could turn your FileMaker sheet into a Web App for the iPhone.

Yeah, but I have two problems with that. For one, I don't know how to do that. :) For another, I'm not sure the web version would work like my sheet (with the layers, tabs, etc.). Maybe it would, I don't know.
