Will this work to help the heat issue or will it be too loud/heavy. any alternatives you have tried?

I have a vantec lapcool, it helps, but don't expect miracles. Air being blown can only do so much, it won't shut off the fans if the thing is too hot, but it will cool it down quicker once the cpu is given some rest.

i know a bunch of friends who use similar products for their laptops. it will def keep your temps down. you would be using those fans instead of the one in your macbook so there will probably be fan noise anyway. it will make the keyboard cooler though.
