I"m considering upgrading my 6,1 from a stock 6 core to a E5-2687W v2 but it's TDP is 150W as compared to the stock CPU which is at 130W.

Has anyone had any direct experience with this? I see on Geekbench (http://browser.geekbench.com/geekbench3/search?utf8=✓&q=MacPro6,1+E5-2687W+v2) there's a handful of benchmarks for the CPU but they were awhile ago and I'm not sure how much I'd use that solely as a guide.

Thanks for reading!

Don’t bother - get the E5-2667 v2 instead if you want to upgrade. Same turbo speed and bins. 130W TDP.

“The E5-2667 v2 is the same speed at any core loading as the E5-2687W v2, the same cache, the same features, except it is slightly cheaper, uses less power and supports more memory. Sounds like an easy win for the E5-2667 v2.”

FWIW I did the same upgrade and am pleased with the results.

Another vote for the 2667 V2. I upgraded a stock quad core with one, and the difference in multicore aware apps is rather substantial.

The Geekbench scores you've linked are of dual CPU systems, so they're Hackintoshes. You'd probably be the first do try a E5-2687Wv2 in an actual MacPro6,1. If you end up doing it, please report back. :)

I still don’t understand why anyone would bother, unless they got the chip for free. A 2667 V2 has the SAME performance and stays within the heat envelope that the nMP was designed for.

I have seen reports of other people doing it successfully, but I wouldn’t keep that system running 24/7 with heavy tasks.

Thank you for your post above, you're right, I was ignorant of this information but think I'll end up with the 2667 V2, it's a no brainer. :)

Interesting - why so? Single core performance?

Yes. E5-2667v2 provides 15% more single core performance than a E5-2697v2. The 15% decrease in multi core performance doesn't really matter for most workloads. VERY few apps can use 24 threads.

How is the 2667 in comparison to a standard 8core Mac Pro? I’m a heavy after effects user and could use each mhz on single core performance...

Minimal. Turbos only 100MHz more. 300MHz non turbo. Maybe a couple of percent difference.

I upgraded my quad core with the 8 core 2687 v2 recently. I have run intensive benchmarks on the machine in the past 2 weeks since the upgrade. No issues with heat, idle is 3 to 4 degrees higher than the 4 core. I use it for running concurrent multiple linux vm's and super happy with the bandwidth and performance. With my current work load the cpu speed does go up to 3.8ghzroutinely due to turbo boost. The caveats the small main board is delicate and the bolts connecting the cpu to plate were extremely tight. So be gentle while upgrading it.

Hi Guys,I have tried every good processor in the trashcan ok..So far its between the 2667 v2,and the 1660 v2 for speed,But I believe the 2687 3.4 is a little bit faster then all the cpu,s for the trashcan, and im going to prove it right here,,right now Im using the 1660 3.7 .4.0 turbo 6 core, with 64 gbs OEM apple memory.700 gpu, and only the 512 gb apple ss Polaris M2 ssd, and im getting 1365..write...1460 readout my 2tb Samsung 970 EVO Plus is coming today, and I believe guys, that this will be the fastest trashcan possible,,if tried every combo..990 pro. etc..the 970 EVO Plus gen 3..with the 1660 3.7. is the fastest combo...100%..I,ll post my score here later tonight after I firmware update the new 2tb 970 EVO Plus..I think im going to hit 1500 ..read for the 1st time guys!..been trying to hit 1500 read...black magic..it must be..allready getting 1585 read..crystaldiskmark for Mac.

And im trying the 2687 next..all post speed test here 100%..I believe the 2687 w v2 is the best cpu..im ginna find out guys..it a little better then 2667

Lance from Mac sound solutions is an Apple tech, and he owns all 3 Mac pros,,5.1...6.1. trashcan.and 7.1 cheese grater, and he said the 2tb..not 1tb..970 EVO Plus will hit 1500 plus,,with the 6 core cpu..he said I know Steve!...I own the 2tb..and he said with an added heat sink..970 EVO Plus is the best for the 6.1 he said 2tb. 1200 endurance.

So Ya,,right now the 2667 is the best overall cpu..906 read..6455 write im getting also..but what im going to prove right here!..with the same 6.1 specs machine!..is the 2667 3.3 faster then the 2687 w v2,,cause known has posted that yet...this we have too see guys..and it will be far and square also, all just change the 1660v2 with the new 2687 w v2,im buying this 1 new guys..with tax its 136$..no box, but it comes in the factory intel danger,,states compost inside....lol..that get them buy the 100,s he said..so its 60$..tested perfect work...lol..or 136$ new in OEM intel static tinfoil...

The 6,1 is very limited in thermal and power “things”, so it is more intelligent to use a CPU who is working under the specs apple is using. With D700 and CPU on load and USB stuff, perhaps you will see a: Bye bye power supply!

460 Watt PSU
Power consume when using OpenCL renderer on GPU and CPU, and I have only 2 x D500 and no USB drive for example. On Mac Pro 6,1 better use the save way.
