Does anyone know if a pair of E5450 Harpertown Xeons will work in a 2,1 Mac Pro in place of the original X5365 Clovertown version? Both models are the LGA771 package and have a 1333 FSB. Are there firmware issues that will prevent the E5450 from working? I have read the forums here, and other sources, but haven't found a definitive answer.

Thanks for any info you can provide.

I think maybe you can. I didn't reread the article ( http://www.o0o.it/pro/ ) but if I remember right you have to mask out one pin and it works.

Thanks for the info, but that article seems to describe the replacement of dual-core 5150 with quad-core 5320. That may require masking the pin.

What I want to do is replace the quad-core 5365 with the quad-core 5450. Will this substitution work as a drop-in without pin-taping or other measures?

I don't think you can drop it in, no. That proc will not work in a MP1,1 or 2,1 as is. The pin mask described at that link, was done in order to get the 1333Mhz buss working so that's why I thought of that. There might be an outside chance that this mod would work with those procs.

Both the X5365 and E5450 have a 1333 FSB, so why would the pin have to be taped?

1.1 - Woodcrest
2.1 - Clowertown
3.1 - Harpertown.

Simple answer - no.
This is a quote from the MacRumors hardware guide:

"Processors for the 2007 Mac Pro - 3.00GHz eight core system

In addition to the processors for the 2006 Mac Pro the 2007 Mac Pro (macpro2,1) has been claimed to have Harpertown support. This has not been confirmed. [1] "

I already bought 2 E5450's on ebay for $75.00. I'm gonna go for it and will post the results here.

The reason I'm doing this is that in the course of switching cases between 2 Mac Pro's (to get the best looking case on the fastest machine), the X5365's appeared to get damaged when the heat sinks were removed. The tops of both CPU's stuck to the heat sinks instead of the processor. I'm leery of putting them back together like that, so I'll try the E5450's.

Thanks for your input.

Cool! Looking forward to it.

And yeah, what Bax posted is only what Apple marketed. Other combinations are possible and do work - as many of us can attest.

Not only. Real world experience confirms this. There's no microcode and CPUIDs for Harpertown CPUs in 2,1 EFI.
However it should loook more like this:
1,1/2,1 Woodcrest, Clovertown
3,1 C0 Harpertown

Please elaborate. What is the source of this information?

The source is years of people asking the same question and no one ever posting back here with successful results.

I thought you said you were going to install them. I am as curious as everyone else. But don't expect me to do the research for you.

bah, I couldn'y help myself:

"If you want evidence, take a look at 2,1 EFI and search CPUIDs of 54XX series CPUs in it.
Hint: you won't find any."

first page on google search for '54xx in 1,1' BTW

Sorry, I didn't realize I had to have the answer before I could ask the question.

No, what you failed to realize is that its easier to type fewer words into a search and find out if your question has been asked before. The added benefit is that if it has you get an immediate answer.

You are welcome.

UTSF, the new four letter word.

I really wonder if it is any easier to say "UTSF!" rather than try to be helpful.

I guess I can understand it tho. This has got to be the worst site I've ever been on for that kinda thing. On pretty much any given day there are 8 to 10 active double and triple posts of the same topic - almost all of which don't really even need to be searched for as they're right there in the page one thread-list. LOL I dunno how it is with Windoze sites but of the other 40 or 50 sits I'm active on it's not like that at all. Multiple sites for Politics, Guns, Vehicles, Photography, Computer Hardware, CG, and so on.

MacRumors is about three times worse than the worst of those - for people posing duplicate topics and not searching 1st. Even the regular users here do it excessively. <shrug>

As the topic starter, I feel that I must write in my defense.

Believe me, I DID UTSF before posting here, but was not able to find a clear answer to my question "Will the E5450 work in a Mac Pro 2,1 in place of the X5365?"

The common wisdom on this site and others seems to be that the 54XX series will not work, and I am reluctantly beginning to accept that. There are a couple of scattered references to Harpertown CPU's possibly working in the MP 2,1, but no proof. I was merely hoping to get a definite answer, with some way to confirm the validity of the information.

I've been a Cube user for years, and frequented the forums at Cubeowner.com. Now I've got a couple of Mac Pro's, so I posted my inquiry here.

I'm sorry if I performed an inadequate search by your standards, I was just looking for a little help.

NP bro, I wasn't actually even thinking of this particular thread. Although when I searched the answer was contained in the top three links returned. I was commenting in general about MacRumors. I should add that this also seems to be the case on other Mac sites too. So I think it's a common attribute of Mac users.

It might be the case that OS X being so "easy to use" attracts a type of user less inclined to independent research. <shrug>

I have no idea why this seems to be the case but I just notice that it is. And I don't think it's evil and even bad in any way. It's just different. And because it's different it doesn't match up with some people"s expectations of forum activity - and that causes some frustration for them.

I was only trying to state that I understood that - and therefor understood the USTF sentiment. :)

As far as 54XX working or not I don't think anyone has actually tried this on a MP2,1 yet. If you already have the CPU's handy I encourage you to try it. It's can't hurt...

OK, OK, I'll stop bitching about the UTSF distraction, and stick to the technical issue at hand.

The E5450's should arrive in a couple days. I'll try them and post the results.

After you'll convince that they don't work, get yourself SUPERMICRO MBD-X7DAL-E-O and make a nice hackintosh of this combo :)

Been there, done that. I built a Hackintosh in a G5 Power Mac case a few years ago, using a different motherboard. My son's using that one as a Linux box. Now I'm using real Mac's.

To repeat an earlier post in this thread, the reason I'm doing this is that in the course of switching cases between 2 Mac Pro's (to get the best looking case on the fastest machine), the X5365's appeared to get damaged when the heat sinks were removed. The tops of both CPU's stuck to the heat sinks instead of the processor. I'm leery of putting them back together like that, so I want to replace them. The X5365's available on ebay are too expensive, and the X5355's are cheaper, but slower. If the 5450's don't work, which is likely, maybe I'll go with the 5355's.
