Uhh...
Hello,

I have an early 2007 MBP 2.33 with 2 gigs of Ram. My machine currently has the 5400rpm 120 gig drive. Is there anyone out there who has upgraded to a 7200 rpm drive who can tell me if its worth it or not?

How much has the upgrade affected heat and power consumption? Is it noticeable? What is your battery life like?

Power consumption is exactly the same between 5400 and 7200rpm hard drives. I dont think its worth it to go for 5400 to 7200 UNLESS your also going to a higher capacity.

I just replaced my 120gb 5400 in my merom mbp myself with a 250gb 5400 western digital drive...thought it was easy...but I have repaired multiple laptops before. there is a definite performance increase...needed more space for my bootcamp.

would you plan on replacing it yourself? That would be kind of stupid since it would void your warranty.

Actually, I think It might void the warranty on the 2.33 MBP. There is yellow tape over a cable that runs over the hard drive (i took it apart today). Anyway, the interior is different from the one pictured in the guide at iFixit.com. I was going to try it myself but not I'm not so sure thats a good idea.

No it doesn't unless you break something while your replacing it. Just be careful...

Im not so sure about this... anyone have any info about how replacing the hard drive affects the warranty?

Thanks for your input!

from what i've heard performance difference is noticeable (in terms of rpm) only if you work often with large files which require long(er) read/write times. heat and power seem neglible.

I've been trying to figure that out aswell since I want to replace my keyboard, from what I've read in the warranty terms it seems he is correct. Under exclusions it lists "damages caused by user upgrades/service" or something like that.

I spoke to the folks at OWC (macsales.com) and they said it does not and for what they charge they think I could do it myself and referred me to the video they put together. Doesn't look so hard but I am still leaning toward having it done at an authorized service center.

I may try tho...

Cheers,
