Hey All ...

I have a early 2008 Mac Pro which has 6GB of ram and it's constantly max'd ... I'm looking doing a serious RAM upgrade, but, not sure which ram I can get away with on it ... Looking locally, the ram that fits the spec for 8GB is like $400... (DDR2 FBDIMM 800) ...

Anything else I can use? DDR3 SDRAM? Thoughts?

If you are on a budget then the widely available 667MHz FB-DIMMs as used in a whole load of Intel servers are much cheaper than the 800MHz Mac only parts specified for the 3,1. Barefeats benchmarked it at only 4% slower in performance & I defy anyone to notice the difference in real life use.

Not only that, if you are still running with a traditional hard drive instead of an SSD that is going to be a bigger bottleneck than the RAM access speed. Just make sure you get the correct RAM with the attached heatsinks - there is a lot of RAM for sale on fleaBay that is advertised for the 3,1 that lacks the heatsinks and I would be nervous to take a chance on it.

Barefeats gave a thumbs up back in 2008 to 667MHz, and to filling all DIMM slots gives a 16% improvement.

I have 1,1 and 16GB of NEMIX for two years running @ 59*C $23 2x2GB
