ODD = Optirac AD-5670S with newest firmware (2AHI)
EFI = most updated (MM31.0081.B06)

Drive would start spinning at low speed briefly and stop for 4-5 cycles and often eventually spin up to high speed and mount. Some times it ejects after failing to mount at high speed spin. CDs may have fewer spin+stop cycles (3-4?) compared to DVD/DVDRs.

Already opened up the drive (This mini lived in a dusty place, had a coat of yellow dust everywhere inside the chassis) and cleaned the laser objective lens. No change.

Was wondering if anyone knows why there is spin start+stop cycles prior to mounting. Does the drive firmware do things like successively change read lens alignment on each cycle or increase the laser power?

The drives just wear out after a while.
Cheap and easy to just buy a USB external and plug it in.
You'll need that external optical drive for the next Mac you buy, in any case!
