Early 2009: How to Get MiniDP to Work?

I have a monitor hooked up to my late 2013 MBP to its Thunderbolt Port and then miniDP on the monitor. Works fine.

I'm trying to plug the same monitor with the same cord into my Early 2009 Mini and it fits. However, the monitor doesn't detect any signal from the Mini. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.
