trying to get a ssd installed in this thing and so far have tried a Samsung 860 evo and SanDisk ultra 3D ssd and both fail to get detected by the Mac. Any clue?
 
After you install the SSD you must open Disk Utility, set the partition type to GUID and erase the drive before the Mac can use it. You want HFS Extended (Journaled) if you’re running macOS 10.12 (Sierra) or earlier. If you use macOS 10.13 (High Sierra) you can use HFS Extended (Journaled) or APFS.
