You’re good to upgrade the 2012 model. It isn’t soldered on for that year

Hi, can the cpu on a early 21” 2012 iMac be upgraded to an i7 or is it soldered in?
Could you clarify what iMac you have?

The Early 2012 iMac does not exist.

The Unibody iMacs (thicker) last release was the Mid 2011 iMacs and the next iMac was the Late 2012 Thin Unibody iMacs.

Either way, I am almost positive that neither are soldered, but it would probably be worth it for you to make sure what iMac you have before you start buying stuff that may not work with it.

Where did you get it?

Maybe there was an education model iMac for early 2012?

I will look it up.
I tried finding an Early 2012 iMac on EveryMac, the iMac Wiki, and the Mac Tracker app, but there is no Early 2012 iMac.

The closest would be an education model, Late 2011 iMac.

So, I would suspect that maybe you are recalling the model wrong, or maybe the model was spoofed on the "About This Mac" window.
