My early 2015 MBP started intermittently not charging after Christmas. I did have Apple Genius Bar replace the battery 3 years ago. I have 2 chargers and neither work. Reset SMC with no luck but fans ramped without slowing down. Coconut Battery (as well as MacOS battery in menu) doesn’t recognize battery installed. Battery is now flat and, when pressing power on, the “connect charger” displays but no light on MagSafe. Not wanting to replace it at this point with the cost of a replacement, so I‘ll have to take it out for repair with me this summer. $60 for shipping out for repair is steep, especially when not knowing what the repair will cost. Any ideas what I could be looking at?

When it would boot, I tried that but it went into Internet Recovery. I'm not sure what it was going to do but I didn't want it wiping my drive so I got out of it. With no juice left in the battery, that option no longer exists.

Take a close look at your charging port and remove carefully any accumulated dirt so the magsafe charger makes a good contact. Use something pointy.

I should've mentioned that I did that. I did it very well, actually.

I'm wondering if the problem could be something called the "dc in board", which is a small "daughterboard" that connects the MagSafe connector to the motherboard.

Here is ifixit.com's page on how to replace it:

Not sure if the Appel Store genius bar will still do this repair.
It doesn't look overly difficult (per ifixit's guide), but you would want THE RIGHT TOOLS for the job.

Thanks for that. It very well could be the issue as I did have a couple of random unexpected shutdowns when this all started. I’ve always babied my MBP but it did slip out of it’s case one time last Fall and fell flat on a thinly carpeted concrete floor, and with a smack. I wonder if something ended up loosening up. I also wonder if there is anything visual to detect with such an issue….maybe pull the connector and push back in?

This is the part available for me right now. Might go for it and replace. Hopefully that‘S it.

Opened up the MBP (the first time on this one for me) and initially saw an indentation on the plastic cover over the battery circuit board. I thought maybe one of the rubber nibs on the inside of the bottom case may have done that when dropping it as mentioned above, but the nib fits into a slot and doesn't come near that plastic cover. It was either there from manufacturing or done when the Apple Genius Bar replaced my battery. I see that one of the wires to the battery circuit board is bent out of the way a bit, probably also done by Genius Bar. That WAS 3 years ago, so I can't see those 2 things being an issue. I've attached 2 pics. I suppose the battery circuit board could be replaced as well. I'll at least order the MagSafe In Board. Not a lot of money. If anyone sees an issue in the pics, let me know.

If swapping the DC-in board fixes things, how about a followup post to let us know you were successful...?

This is really helpful. I should probably figure out where to test for voltage. I’m hoping it’s not a faulty SMC chip. That would most definitely be an Apple job.

Well, I cancelled my order. The DC In-board is passive and I don’t think it’s my issue. As I said earlier, Coconut Battery and the menu bar was not detecting the presence of any internal battery, so, I believe that would mean the issue is deeper than just the DC In-board, no? The DC In-board was only $14 but I’d rather not spend that it it’s definitely not the issue. Any suggestions on this?

Wowzer! I just pulled the DC in-board connector out of its socket and reseated it. What do you know? The charging light instantly came on and my MBP booted up! Problem solved so far. Not sure what the real issue was, but reseating the connector did the trick (so far!).

And I hope I don't sound over enthusiastic, but there is more spunk in most everything. Mail especially, which was sluggish in starting up, now snaps open. I should say "Thanks!" to Fisherman, who pointed me in the right direction.

Would you have an update if you had any issues again? My 2015 15” is also having intermittent charging issue. I bought a new dc board and charger. The new charger worked for two weeks then it had the same issue again. I changed the board but didn’t have time to test it long since I needed to leave for a few months.
