Hi, I'm thinking of buying a used mid 2014 Macbook Pro with a cycle count of 438 - is it fairly straightforward to replace the battery on these? This will be my first Macbook Pro purchase so I'm a tad clueless...

iFixit.com is a good place to look.
If you are looking at a 13-inch:

Not easy. You have to remove the battery from the tape/glue that holds it in place. Might take you a couple of hours or more, as you want to be quite careful during the removal process

I presume it's the kind of thing that a computer shop could easily do. I don't trust these hands of mine necessarily...

I have done the battery replacement on 3 retina 13" MacBook Pros and it was very easy.

I don't like using any kind of runny liquid inside any computer. To "cut" the adhesive bond between the battery and top case, I used thin, braided, nylon string and gently dragged the string from top to bottom of each cell in a sawing motion. After this, I removed the remaining adhesive by using a cloth that was lightly dampened with rubber cement thinner.

It was straightforward using the kit from OWC. As always, YMMV but taking your time (by planning to have enough that you’re not rushed) is key.
