Before I upgrade to 2 TB I want to make sure it will finally be easy and fast to add content to it simply. Like maybe while I am sleeping or away from iPad for a little while.

Anyway to set this up to do automatically? Guessing not :(

I gave up on 4g lte / 5g being enough for high quality video to stream reliably without buffering. :(

Depends what service you're downloading from.

iTunes purchases seamlessly download in the background.

Alas, can't say the same for HBOMax, Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime, etc. Sometimes stuff downloads in background, sometimes they don't.

For reliable wireless downloads, I think you'd need to set Display Auto-Lock to Never, have the iPad plugged in and the downloading app in foreground. This is what I do when batch downloading comics.

Alternately, sneakernet (using HDD, SSD or flash drive via the USB-C port) works as well for non-DRM content.

I copied about 1.5TB of media content from my (very large) media library in iTunes via USB-C. Took about 4 hours. I use a 16 inch Macbook Pro, but still use iTunes, via Retroactive, a tool that sllows you to install iTunes to MacOS's that no longer support iTunes directly. (the new, individual Apple apps, lke TV, Book, etc) suck for managing device content.)
