follow step by step

Get IPSW http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
You Have to download ( AppleTV2,1_4.3_8F305_Restore )

download sn0wbreeze V2.7.3 - open the program follow the steps , after is all done you will have a custom IPSW on your desktop

if you cant get your apple tv into DFU mode ,use the program here called iReb http://ih8sn0w.com/index.php/welcome.snow

now open itunes (remember to remove the power cord from the apple tv or you will get an error when trying to restore

in itunes with the apple tv in DFU mode and connected to the computer via the micro usb hold down shift on the keyboard & click restore in itunes, go to your desktop & select the custom IPSW that snowbreeze created

after itunes finishes restoring, you should go over to your tv with the atv2 and in the menu you should see "Nitotv"

now how to install XBMC

first go into nitotv /install software and you will see xbmc there, install that

now if you have mkv files that are 720p or 1080p this version of xbmc wont work

you have to install a nightly build version that gets updated every couple of weeks

heres how after installing the regular xbmc from nitotv, fist in nitotv make sure openssh is installed on your atv2, now you need your atv2 ip address you can find this in the atv2 settings/general/network

now leave the atv2 connected to the tv & go back to your computer, your going to do some ssh

open an ssh program, I use one called Putty

enter your atv2 ip address ,
username :root
password: alpine

now copy & paste these commands

1. wget http://hadm.net/~keith/xbmc_atv2/latest_atv2.deb

2. dpkg -i latest_atv2.deb

3. rm latest_atv2.deb

dont use the starting numbers

heres a video guide

SSH Latest Beta Nightly Built XBMC 10.07 on Jailbroken Apple TV 2 4.2.2

thats it just go over to your appletv and try & play your mkv videos in xbmc

Great guide. This should help people a lot.

FYi, For those that don't want to mess with the nightlies, IOS 4.2.1 with the regular release of XBMC (Dharma 10.1) works fine for me. I am able to watch 720p mkv's (with hardware acceleration turned on). SOME of the nightlies have broken SOME things for SOME people. I would suggest checking the threads (look at the stickies) over at XBMC.org before deciding. For me, 4.2.2 with a regular XBMC release caused problems. Because I don’t really need MLB or Netflix and didn't want to mess with the nightly, I downgraded to 4.2.1 & re-installed XBMC. Che is right about nightlies fixing some things....but they aren't stable / official releases and can create problems too - particularly with Addons & alternate skins.

Also, I would recommend a program or App capable of SFTP (Cyberduck for Mac, Filezilla for PC or Files Connect for iPhone/iPad). This will allow you to drag & drop files to from ATV. Very helpful when installing Addons, skins etc. not in the official repo or making other changes.

Those with a Mac can ssh from Terminal of course and iPad/iPhone users can use the Prompt App for ssh.

I have not been able to down load the firmware from the web site that you mentioned. It works for every other version of firmware but not for the 8F305. Does any one knows any other way to get the firmware?

I always use the links from iClarified for the IPSW's. I trust them & they tend to keep them up to date.

Just google the name of the firmware you will find a download link

I keep downloading the 8F305 firmware from different sources but both the pownage tool and snowbreeze tell me that it is the wrong bundle. I dont know what i am doing wrong

I tried that one as well but the link for the AppleTV2,1_4.3_8F305_Restore.ipsw redirects me to the apple web site.

i have the issue, i tried seas0npass it freezes everytime at unzipping IPSW. I also tried pwnage tool, i placed the proper .bundle file in package contents of pwnage tool yet it still says invalid firmware, download from various sources including apple and no go. VERY frustrated right now as its 2 hours i have been at this
