Imac Catalina--seems to no simple way or if there is, not easily locatable for me...I don't want to pay--local library has that feature and function.--not at all simple and easy...cumbersome, trial and error, and time-consuming..really not worth the trouble.--

No, I don't want to pay Apple -

So -player, books, download, start--thank you -
simple stuff gets more convoluted each time we do upgrades ..good for apple bad for me..Thank you all

Where are you trying to download from? Post a link so we can try it here.
What format are the audiobooks in?

This has nothing to do with Apple. My library provides me with free access to 6 different e-book and audiobook services. Different companies, different content, different target audience. Each has different player platform availability. None of those have anything common with Apple and typically they are available on most platforms, iOS and macOS included. What they have in common is, that they are locked into that player for copyright issues. So, you need to use that specific service player and have no choice. I used previously Overdrive and it kind of worked.
This is between you and your local library - and services they subscribe to.

short of researching each reader, download, various formats, and two or more appropriate SW pkgs to download or not-- more hassle--

I thought there would a relatively simple easy solution -wrong

but thanks anyway I would rather do without then get jerked around with all this crap..and that is what I will do...instead of falling for this bs. thanks all
