Easy to re-jailbreak phone?

Hi all, I tried searching but couldn't find an exact answer to my question.

I have an iPhone 3G on 2.0 software. I want to stay on 2.0 but am interested in unlocking my phone so I can change text alerts, etc. My question is this... once unlocked, can i re-lock it if there's a new update to install? If it's too risky, I'll just wait until (hopefully) Apple adds this feature.

Appreciate the advice,
 
You can't install Apple iPhone software updates directly on a jailbroken iPhone. You'll need to wait till there is a jailbreak for the update.
 
If you are with an official carrier, a firmware update usually will not brick your phone, only automatically relock it

Right now all versions of firmware are jailbreak-able

As always, a "restore" in iTunes will bring you back to factory condition with no signs a jailbreak ever took place

Right, re-jailbreaking it is very easy. More realistically, though, if you want it jailbreaked, what you're going to end up doing is probably updating slightly less frequently and waiting out until the update and the jailbreak are both stable. For instance, Pwnage 2.0.2 coming out this last week and the 2.0.1 revision were what it took for me to finally upgrade from 1.1.4... it took a couple of hours to do the upgrade (it takes probably 45 minutes even officially, I guess? Simply because all the music gets reloaded on the phone, and USB is absurdly slow? At least, with the jailbreaked phone it was necessary to reload 6 gigs of music). You are typically able to get all your settings back, though -- at least, I restored from backup after I upgraded my iPhone and haven't seemed to have any related problems.

But for instance, had I pwn'd 2.0, I would have had another half a day of screwing around to go to 2.0.1, so I'm really glad I didn't.
 
its very easy i have been switching back and forth numerous times, for jailbreak at least not sure on unlocking

Not sure if you meant to say this, but you can very easily install official apple software updates on a jailbroken phone. However, once you do this your phone will not be jailbroken anymore until the new pwn for that software version is released and you reinstall with that. So switching back and forth between jailbroken and non jailbroken is very easy (if time consuming).

Exactly. Basically, an official firmware update from Apple will wipe out a specific partition which is where the jailbroken software is located. This is why you lose the jailbreak with an offcial update, but your phone is usually not bricked.
 
Ha! "Usually" not bricked. That's the part I'd be scared about.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to brick your phone from jailbreaking.

its virtually impossible to brick your phone at all anyway even if your unlocking.

It is an overused term always used wrongly.

So don't worry just go ahead and jailbreak!
 
yeah jailbreaking is completely safe and reversible, i dont know what those other people are talking about having to wait until new jb comes out.

Here's the process:

1) Apple releases new firmware.
2) People update to it and erase their previous jailbroken partition.
3) Everyone patiently waits for a new jailbreak to be released, effectively cracking the newest firmware again.

There is always a delay before a new version of the firmware is jailbroken. The 2.0.1 took about a week.
2.0 took about a day.
1.1.3 took a few weeks if I remember correctly.

As of right now, all firmware versions have been jailbroken. Until the next one is released of course.... :p

o i see, i meant to say that, that is not the only way and you can restore to official apple firmware anytime.
 
So what happens if you have a jailbroken iphone and you do a backup.

Now you want to go back to the stock 2.0.1 apple software, so you do a restore, won't the backup be backup of the jailbroken iPhone?

Like I said, the jailbrake information is on a seperate partition than your media/saved data. When you do a backup in iTunes, it doesn't backup the jailbroken apps or their information.

Ok so if I'm understanding this correctly.

Basically, if I perform a backup of a jailbroken iPhone, the only things that gets back'd up are the legitimate apps bought or free from the appstore?

All the applications that I have downloaded from Cydia or installer.app doesn't?

And...

If I ever do a restore, and try to jailbreak again, I have to do re-download everything again?

Obviously, I haven't jailbroken yet but did have a question about backups.

This is all exactly right. If you restore again (to a custom firmware or not), only your official apps and data will be preserved.

As of right now, every new jailbreak requires a restore.

This is like a rat race.

-2.0.2 released you jailbreak, download applications from cydia/installer.app applications, set the settings and you're happy.

then...

-Apple release 2.0.1, you wait and wait, 2.0.4 winpwn or the mac version is released, you restore to the apple version, you jailbreak again, you sync all the "legitimate" applications and then....

You have to go re-download all the applications you were happy to begin with from Cydia/installer.app.

1. Does Cydia/Installer.app carry all the apps that app store has?
2. When a new version is out for any app that is sold in the app store, can you just do an update directly or you have to wait till Cydia/installer.app converts it or something like that?

lol it is kind of like a rat race. Usually I only upgrade to the newest firmware once it has been jailbroken. I like the unofficial apps too much!

A jailbroken iPhone works the exact same way with iTunes and the app store. The jailbreak only adds features/apps. The jailbreak apps are ones that Apple won't allow on the app store and they appear on Cydia/Installer instead. Cydia/Installer do not carry app store apps (generally).

Some people do the updates every time, as soon as they're available. Other people just wait some out. Like I didn't get 2.0, but if I had, I wouldn't make a big deal of 2.0.1, as it seems to not really fix any bugs or add new features. As it turned out, I got 2.0.1, and so if Apple releases an update in the very near future, I might just pass on it.

No, they're generally different apps, although a lot of apps that were distributed via Installer before 2.0 made a (probably permanent) move to the Store.

You use the Store on a jailbreaked phone just like you do on any other iPhone -- iTunes and the App Store manage App Store apps exactly the same. Cydia and Installer don't do anything to / with App Store apps. The App Store apps basically don't know that the iPhone is broken, and Cydia and Installer are basically oblivious to whatever iTunes is installing on the iPhone.
 
Using apt to back up installed JB apps?

Isn't there some command-line shenanigan (using dpkg-deb perhaps?) for making a .deb of all the installed JB apps? It won't preserve the settings, but at least you won't have to re-download/install all the apps..

You could do something like this I suppose, but in all honesty, re-downloading the apps just isn't a real big deal. It took my literally 5 minutes when I went from 2.0 to 2.0.1
