Easy way to add an SSA subtitle file to a .mov movie so it will play on Apple TV?

I was stuffing around trying to do this a few weeks ago. The conclusion that I came to was that you need to re-encode the film using visualhub and the force quicktime decoding option to keep the subtitles.

You would not believe how long it took to re-encode, i'm talking 3 days or so !
Add to that the video stuttered and I was quite annoyed. I'm waiting for software to become available that makes this easy so the files can be played on the PS3. Something would have to become available in the near future.

SSA/ASS are Matroska Sub Station Alpha Subtitles I don't think you can do it without Re-Encoding the file.

ok, so then another question I would have then is - how can I extract the Subtitle file from an MKV on a mac?

MKV Merge (Google it), You can mux and demux what you need.

Sorry I don't want to make a new topic- is there any way to change the subtitle font/color of the subtitles handbrake uses for videos- they look very jaggy and yellow is ok, but I'd prefer white or something outlined in black.

Actually I think it's specific to the file- I have the dvd "City of God" and I think the subtitles on it are yellow and jaggy- I just tried handbraking a piece of my Seven Samurai movie , and the subtitles on it are white- and a different font. It'd be nice if I could just edit the subtitle file.

This doesn't exactly answer your question, but if you can get hold of subtitles in .srt- or .sub-format instead, you can add them to your movie with Submerge, takes a minute or so, no reencoding.

I used to add subs in QT with Perian and then reencode them for ATV wit VisualHub, that took 22 hours for a 45 min show om my 3 GHz iMac. Converting for ATV without subs takes 2 hours, adding subs after 1 minute and I can disable the sub in QT if I'd like.
