As title states, not got a clue what music and whatsapp 'in background' means ? Apple Music is turned off and whatsapp backup is also off. Used 1.6gb of data in a week.

in background means that the screen was off but the apps were working in background ...typical behavior for apps such as WhatsApp and Music

Shouldn't the screenshot be of the cellular page in settings or am I missing something?

I was emphasising the 'in background' meaning, thread title is maybe misleading but would have thought so many hours in background was eating into my data.

Try turning off Wifi Assist in settings>cellular scroll all the way to the bottom and toggle off.

Edit: Oops. Just saw that this was already mentioned.

But they do eat data? Why does music when I'm not listening it ? All I have is my music there
Music shouldn't consume data, unless it is syncing your library. Music app on background means that you were listening to music while the screen was off, like I usually do.

Whatsapp surely consumes data, receiving messages in background, but we are speaking of some kilobytes, because photos and audio aren't downloaded if you don't open the app.

iOS 9 is eating data for me too. 6GB in 3 days. I have not changed my usage, am on Wifi when at home, and have wifi assist turned off. I hate this because I really don't want a crazy phone bill.

I have noticed increased usage over the last few months on iOS 8. I went from an average of 400mb/month to 800mb/month.
