Think it's a straight-forward question but the answer might be less so.

I've just put a bid on a replacement hard-drive for my 4G iPod which is being sold as new. If my bidding is successful and I receive the item, is there any way I can tell the item is new rather than refurbished?

BTW: The sale photos show the item in a static bag but it's hard to make out the details on the label.

Thanks
BV

I don't believe there is any way to tell if it's a new or refurb. If it works, who cares? The price you pay to save a few bucks, I guess.

Well, I won the auction... £87 including postage & packing for a 60gb MK6006GAH to go in the dead 4th gen...

Now to either install it myself or find someone to do it for me. ;)

I replaced a 4G iPod screen and HDD recently BV. As said above, it's not too difficult. A bit scary - but once you've got the case open, you'll be fine.

make sure you've got the right tools though. You can do it with a screwdriver but it will likely scratch it at some stage. You can buy a set of plastic tools for about £2-3 on eBay as well.

If you don't want to try it I'd be happy to - as long as I'm free of any "you break you pay" disclaimers ;)

i'd be more than happy to do it for you, i recently did it on my 4g 20GB.

as for telling if it's new the only way to find that out is to take it apart and inspect the dust filter, if it's been clogged at all it's not new, otherwise it's pretty impossible to tell.
