Okay, I just got my iphone, it was OTB 1.1.2 BB 04.02... BL ?? don't know how to check that.

I used iJailBreak 0.53 (the newest one) to activate/jailbreak/unlock and everything seems to be working.

but my question is, I don't have a data plan (yet) and only want to use wifi for my data needs. the edge icon shows up, but when i turn off wifi i can't connect to anything that requires internet.

will i be charged for data if i only use wifi? how can i be sure edge is truned off?

thanks for your help!

You can call/talk to AT&T and have them remove the Edge access and charge from your plan. They won't want to, but I'm... pretty sure they have to if you ask... Or you could jailbreak and install one of those programs that manage Wi-Fi, Edge, SSH, and Bluetooth and turn off Edge from there.

On your iPhone, go to Settings, General, Network, EDGE. If you clear out the settings there, I'm pretty sure that your phone won't be able to access EDGE.

Just go to:

Code:
Settings > General > Network > Data Roaming: OFF.

Make sure you turn data roaming off following the instructions above. It means that you can't use the internet unless connected to a WiFi and so you don't pay for it.

The OP doens't want to use EDGE at all, even at home.

The data roaming option is about using data whilst roaming, i.e. out of your country. Turning this off won't keep you from using it at home.

On my unhacked 1.1.3 phone, turning off data roaming does not stop gprs/edge connections when I'm on my home network.

The info on the on screen display states "when abroad, turning off Data Roaming may avoid roaming charges when using email, web browsing and other data services"

thanks for your replies!

I have cleared out all setting under edge, and have bossprefs installed and have edge turned off there.

I'm just wondering now will i get charged for using wifi? I don't have att technically, my cell company was bought out by att but we haven't made the switch yet, I know if you don't have a data plan with att and you use a wifi enabled phone say with your home internet, you will be charge for incoming data. Does unlocking prevent this (on any carrier that might do it) or might I get a hefty bill at the end of the month?

You don't really need both. Bossprefs simply erases your EDGE settings to turn it off.

Whoa, that sounds really strange. However, it's been my experience that the WiFi on the iPhone works completely independently from the phone/tarrif.
