Does anybody know the correct settings to get EDGE (or just GPRS) working with an unlocked 1.1.2 UK iPhone, using a Tesco Mobile (o2) PAYG sim.

I've searched the forum, and tried all sorts of settings, but can't get it to work. I've got OpenSSH and WinSCP.

I'd be dead pleased if I could get this working, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Thanks in advance.....

I did try asking TESCO about this but they said they don't support iphones :(

It took me a whille to find out how to alter the APN setting as initially all I got was VPN settings to configure, but in installer there is an app called services which enables you to toggle EDGE, WIFI and BLUETOOTH settings on and off. Install that, switch wifi on and make sure edge is off, then switch edge back on and a screen pops up asking you to choose a service. Select other then add the string prepay.tesco-mobile.com in the APN field.

I think you need a wifi connection for it to enable. If the box doesn't pop up leave EDGE switched off for a whille then go back and try swtching it on again. Now when wifi is awitched off I get a blue box, sometimes it has a E in it. However, altho it tries I have yet to connect to safari but I don't get any 'you are not subscribed to edge' messages anymore so I guess it must have done something!

Hope this helps :)

Does this work OK for you? If so I must be missing something as I can not get Edge to work at all.

Look forward to getting some help and advice - Thanks in advance!

No I can't get edge to work - safari attempts to connect but gets timed out - I assume its because its TESCO. Google maps work tho :)

Got this up and running now. Its all pretty slowwww, and expensive (£4 per megabyte) and so I keep it turned off with SERVICES. Might come in handy one day?

Do they only charge by the MB? Do you constantly get system messages telling you what your remaining credit is (which is a great feature for calls)?

Like the previous poster, I'd love to know how you did it. I've played with the SERVICES application and that doesn't seem to do it. I've tried O2 Contract and PAYG APN settings as well as the TescoWAP ones all to no avail. I'd be very grateful if you could let us know how you managed it.

Right, this is how I did it. Don't get too excited though as when you get it to work, its not very fast, but safari and google maps definately work for me.

I followed the instructions here

You need to understand how to use ssh and winscp, and have bsd subsystem installed on your iphone too. This was all new to me and hard to understand, but by reading and understanding the whole thread, it was manageable and quite rewarding to do.

I used these settings that I found elsewhere on the web for Tesco Mobile.

EDGE options disabled?

I've just upgraded to 1.1.4, and the option panel to configure EDGE settings isn't there any more. Odd, because it's there if I take out the Tesco Sim Card and replace it with an Orange Sim Card.

Anyone have similar problems, or know what's going on?

This is because the iPhone recognises the Tesco SIM card as an O2 SIM card. The option to change the edge settings does not appear when using a legitimate O2 SIM card, when i put a vodafone SIM in my unlocked iPhone the edge options appear in Settings. Not sure how to get around this.

Just use these

This worked perfectly for me, I just typed in the APN details and it connected! :D Amazing - I never thought it would so easily. I guess I'm pretty lucky then seeing the other posts. I didn't need to do any of the stuff in the link either.

I also have the new free triple credit in the new payasyougo tesco tariff so I can get a load of surfing free for the month. Perfect!

Thanks Patchh :)

I've found O2 to be the cheapest option for a prepaid iPhone in the UK. £7.50 a month for 200MB of data, £10 for unlimited. If you top up £10 each month, you get a bunch of free texts too. Top up £20 a month and you get a large number of free texts (300, IIRC). That gives you £10 a month for calls, and all the data you want... plus free WiFi access at The Cloud hotspots.

Oh, and O2 has the same coverage as Tesco, since Tesco's just a MVNO reselling O2 service.

Your better off getting a new O2 PAYG Sim and purchasing the O2 Web & Wi-Fi Bolt On. Its made specially for iPhone users and costs £10 a month, and you get unlimited access to all The Cloud & BT Openzone Hotspots, as well as EDGE/3G Functionality.
