Well with thouands of internet capable phones coming online at around the same time they had to to something..

that's awesome to hear!! i knew they would improve their service after EVERY SINGLE reviewer bashed AT&T for its slowness

I just really hope this translates well into smaller markets. I'm not holding my breath though... So far, everyone with good results have been in fairly large cities (Manhattan and So FL--Miami, I'm assuming).

Great news!

Hopefully the 200kb/s (25KB/s) can be sustained after the massive influx of iphone users hop onto the network.

25KB/s is not bad at all, 4-5x faster than dialup.

In comparison, I believe before AT&T's $50MM network upgrade, edge averaged roughly 100kb/s (12.5KB/s)?

So that's a pretty impressive increase. AT&T is really pushing this outdated network to its limits!

i just ran a test and got 121kb but i've never used the data on my phone before so i dont' have anything to compare it to. i guess we'll see if anythings actually changed tomorrow when everyone jumps on.

downtown Dallas, tx. i would think this would be one of the places they would have put some effort into.

25KB/s is not bad at all,

Absolutely correct. Once thing about the EDGE complainers...it's not like you can download large files yet. If 25KB/s is going to be typical, that's perfectly fine for browsing. Hell, I sometimes only get that with my DSL connection.

WOW now that you mention it, Im on the internet with my blackjack in boston now and its by far faster then ever before!

WOW now that you mention it, Im on the internet with my blackjack in boston now and its by far faster then ever before!

I'm both happy about what I'm hearing and fearful that these speed increases will vanish when several thousand iPhones start using EDGE tomorrow

I'd like to know what cities were part of it, that's for sure. I've already had the Media Max taken off my account, so I can't check my EDGE speeds. :(

Never tested it before, but from what I understand, these results are at (or above?) the theoretical limit for EDGE. Tested on Blazer 4.5 on a Treo 680 on AT&T EDGE about 5 minutes ago. North Seattle (Near the University - and the Apple Store), 5 bars.

Speed
337.2 kilobits per second
Communications 337.2 kilobits per second
Storage 41.2 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 24.9 seconds
Subjective rating Not bad

From the data on howardforum:

New York City: 184kb/s
Queens, NY: 186kb/s-230kb/s
Chicago suburbs: 160kb/s
S. Florida: 176kb/s-204kb/s
Washington DC: 196kb/s-207kb/s
Philly: 191kb/s-264kb/s
Marion, Indiana: 186kb/s-196kb/s

And tonight, for one minute, Deanster had the fastest, and finest EDGE in all the land...

I just ran the test again, since mine was so much higher than the others listed... and...

Speed
465.8 kilobits per second
Communications 465.8 kilobits per second
Storage 56.9 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 18 seconds
Subjective rating Not bad

wow...

that's a tad over 42 kilobytes/sec....that's definitely acceptable for web pages.

Definitely acceptable. You will probably even get YouTube to work on that with a reasonable delay while it buffers.

I knew Apple wouldn't let the iPhone work on a dial-up like network...good work getting AT&T's network built up for this!

crap. i think i just cost myself a lot of money. i didn't realized i only have a .5MB data plan. thought it was more...and i just ran probably 2MB's of speedtests....at 1cent per KB over my limit...sux.

Ok -- went to the speedtest page on my EDGE phone:

Personal test results
