Is iPad able to edit hosts file, yet? If not, why is Apple still blocking this essential feature?

6 years of using iPad and I have not once missed this "essential feature".

OP is probably doing web development/server admin stuff and does not have DNS in place. I am assuming a test environment, my most common use of this. Testing a say 4 node beowolf cluster in virtual its easier to mod host files than stand up a DNS server, play with bind then direct clients to that.

Also a nice feature when you have several sites off of 1 webserver with no dns. Sometimes it can suck remembering the ports they run off of. So a nice "pet" name as it were can be helpful.

Worth noting its also a nice method to reach something when your implemented DNS is having issues for whatever reason.

Also useful as a ghetto firewall. No nat-nanny application in place...modify local hosts to direct unwanted sites to 127.0.0.x....and they hit loopback and error page.

Dead horse rez'd...different users have different needs. Why apple needs to rewrite the whole iOS can do anything bit they have going on. It opens up cases like this.

It never ends does it? If you have specific needs, and don't do research if something meets your needs and even within the return window you still can't figure out if it meets your needs....

Ranting about how Apple doesn't make it a magical do-it-all laptop equivalent is getting really tiresome.

Apple will do whatever it thinks is right. If the market doesn't validate apple's opinion, Apple will fail and a competitor will rise with a better product. So please, let nature take its course and go do something fun and productive.
