The last time I needed to include images and text side by side by side was iOS 3. I had to settle for a UIWebView.

I tried seeing what people do now and found this post:
http://ios-blog.co.uk/featured-posts/ios-5-rich-text-editing-series/

That comes from iOS 5 - it looks like people are still using UIWebViews and that Apple still hadn't provided anything good as of 3 years ago.

So I'm wondering - is there anything that Apple added in iOS 6 or 7 (or maybe something upcoming in iOS 8) that makes this dramatically easier?

Or am I really going to have to follow a seven part tutorial to make this work?

iOS7 TextKit -Exclusion paths...

The best I've seen to date was in Ray Wenderlich's "iOS7 by Tutorials" it answered the question I had about the new features, but that is a paid book. There should be some good free tutorials out there and the WWDC13 session covered a fair bit as well.

I can't find anyone talking about attachments besides images and I'm pretty confused about exclusion paths.

Yes but you can tap and image a fire a method in response to that.
So wouldn't video and audio just be a placeholder image that triggers the video to play?
