Edited Playlists on iPhone get overwritten once synched with Itunes

I know this was a feature in iOS 4, but I loved the ability to edit playlists from my iPhone. This way when you hear a song you like, you can edit one of your favorite playlists and add it. However, once I sync back to my iTunes library, the playlist on the iPhone gets overwritten by the older copy in my library. Is this be design?
