Editors/apps opening up on boot up

The last few times I have booted up my machine, I have noticed that several apps open up and need to close them--Word, Powerpoint, KompoZer, VLC. This is despite the fact that none of these were open at the time that the machine was rebooted.

This is on my machine with specs in the signature:

Any ideas on what is going on and how I can stop them from opening up like this?

Yes. Go to apple menu - system preferences - Users and groups - start session tab (not password) - select apps that you don't want to start automatically and delete them.

You could also be telling your system to automatically open your current opened tabs on reboot. hope it helps.

The first suggestion --
That tab only has iTunesHelper and AdobeResourceSynchronizer. I have no idea what those are...it is safe to uncheck them? I see Dropbox as well, but it is already unchecked.

For the second suggestion --
That was indeed the problem. Basically the last few shutdowns were unscheduled...machine would just freeze up and I'd reboot. This time when I went in to reboot manually, the window popped up with the box checked for opening existing windows. Unchecking that box and rebooting caused a clean boot.

Still, what I don't understand is why every app that I have ever used opens up if that box is checked, even though none of those apps were running at the time of reboot. I usually quit apps after I'm done so that they are no longer in the system tray, or, for those which are permanently in the tray, the dot below them showing they are active is removed.

iTunes helper should be running. Adobe makes sense, if you have their software installed. Checking or unchecking has nothing to do with the apps starting or not (if they are there, they will start), it is just about not making their window active.

Maybe we should see why does the machine freezes in the first place?

I'm not sure why it freezes. It doesn't happen very often, maybe once every few weeks. The last time it happened, I lost all of my Chrome history (sites visited, stored passwords, etc.), so perhaps it had something to do with Chrome. The only other thing I can think of is maybe the hard drive is filling up--I have only 17 GB out of 120 GB left. Could that be a problem?

I believe that you should open the disk utility app and repair permissions. If it happens again, download the appcleaner.app, and delete everything associated with Chrome. Then, download it again.
