Ok, If I go through the Apple Store online through the education store of my university, iLife '06 comes up as $59.99, a $20 discount.

So instead of waiting for the software to ship, I decided just to go to the Apple Store near my apartment and pick it up. There the guy at the register told me that education discounts do not apply to software. What gives? Did this guy rip me off? I decided just to buy it at $79.99 because I needed it that night, but I intend to go back.

you can only get discounts on apple hardware at the actual apple stores. to get the discount on the software you have to purchase it through apple's online store.

The educational discount only applies to software when you order it online or over the phone. While it is exactly the same software, the licensing is different. The Apple Stores do not carry this version. They do have some non-Apple software at educational discounts.

qzak is right. For some reason, Apple offers education discounts on software only through the online Apple store and school stores like university bookstores. Apple retail stores only offer the education discount on hardware.

Mm hmm. That would be my suggestion to you... head over to your college/uni bookstore/Apple Reseller and pick up the software there. :edit: I know the OP already got it, but for anyone else who might happen upon this thread.

I found that out the hard way with an hour long "joy ride" a couple days ago... oh well, the FedEx person should be here soon with my copy :)

And the bookstore at my college doesn't carry any Mac software
