It was $1899 when I checked the day it came out. Only $100 off.
 
When did you see it for$1800 because I ordered mine on wed w/educational pricing and a few cto options and it ws 1899 base price
 
edit: edu price used to be 10% off retail. looks like apple decreased it. ohh well

Well that's just plain false. Entry-level iBooks/MacBooks have routinely been closer to 5% off...
 
It's all about profit margin. Apple doesn't mind giving edu discounts and eating the difference when it means they might get the younger crowd interested and buying more from them in the future. With that 24" LCD I'm guessing the profit margin is a bit lower. Thus, less of a discount.
