Ok so I am graduating high school tomorrow and as a grad gift my g parents offered to get me a laptop. So i told them a month ago I wanted the low end MBP. As of yesterday they already bought it for me and are coming in town tomorrow with it.Now I see the MB has come out and i really like it in black. So the dilemma is should I keep the MBP or exchange it for the black MB and roughly 400-500 dollar Apple store credit? I am a rather basic user who will be doing basic college student things. I dont plan on doing any big editing things. Much help will be appreciated!

I'd say: it primarily depends on the portability you want.. the 15 an 17 inch MBP is really to big to fit in a backpack with your books, the MB however fits in just nicely :).

Answer the following questions.

Do you need portability?

Do you play games?

Do you mind heat?

If you answer yes to games and no to portability and heat, get a MBP.

If you answered no to games, and yes to portability and heat, get a MB.

I have had both, and i personally prefer the black MB, but different people have different reasons. (Also, remember the 10% restocking fee).

the 10% restocking fee only applies if it's been opened, which this hasn't.

When you say the "low end" MBP - do you mean the 1.83 or the 2.0? When did they buy it? Because the 1.83 was dropped on the day the MBs were released, so if that's what they bought, definitely return it and get a 2.0 for the same price.

I think the only real question is whether you'll want to play games on it. If yes, keep the pro. If not, the MB will be perfect for you and that extra money can be better spent elsewhere. :)

go for the pro... when i went to college for my first semester i was constantly having to borrow my roomates desktop because there were certain aps and websites that i had to use for some of my business classes that only ran on XP. Now, however, you can run boot camp to load up XP. The extra GPU of the MBP will be nice incase you're tempted to do anything game wise other than solitare when booted up in XP.

You can run bootcamp on the non-pro Macbooks too. They're Intel as well.

MacBook Pro has:
bigger screen
better keyboard
better GPU

MacBook has:
better portability
More durable

other than that, they seem to be very similar machines. If you game much, get a MBP. If you dont, get a MB. I reckon its as simple as that.

Portability: Both are portable, both will fit in a backpack easily. The 15" MBP is a mere 1.32 inches wider, 0.68 inches more in depth, and 0.4 pounds more in weight. That is not a big difference.

It comes down to what you will be using it for and what features you will be needing. If you need power and or play games, get the MBP.

*EDIT: Scratch that, just get whatever makes you happy. Both are suitable for college since thats what its primary usage is for, education, am I correct?

white black or silver?

i'd say silver is the best of the three...
white gets dirty easily
black costs more than it should

i just bought a new MB in black today and have it sitting next to my MacBook Pro so I could do some comparisons. The first thing that strikes me is the screen on the MB reproduces colors better than the MBP. In fact, next to the MacBook, the MBP looks a little dingy. Using the default wallpaper from Apple, I can tell a noticeable difference in the colors and brightness. Of course, my MacBook Pro looked awfully good until I got it next to the MacBook.

All things being equal, I would have a hard time choosing. I like the silver for keeping it clean and looking good, but the black looks good. I mean, really good. If it keeps fairly clean, I think I found the computer I will be happy with for quite some time.

i guess it comes down to which computer will perform and last the best for the next four years?

You can get the MBP with glossy screens now too.
