Eject key for peripherals

When I have my USB flash drive plugged into my iMac, I can't eject it with my keyboard Eject key. Is this a problem with my computer, or is this true with everyone?

Also, if this is true with everyone's computer... why is that? It would be really useful, I think.

The eject key is only for ejecting discs from the optical drive.

Eject it by control-clicking (right-clicking) and selecting "eject", or locate it in the finder and hit the eject icon next to it, or drag it to the trash. Many options.
