Ejecting USB and finder window closing

I've never figured out what makes the finder window close when ejecting a USB memory stick. It seem to be fairly random if it stays open or closes.

Most of the time I'd prefer it stayed open. I've copied files and want to look at the files on the mac, and the window disappears when ejecting the USB.

Other times, it can be on the USB drive, and ejecting goes to the home directory.

What is supposed to happen and how can I tell the mac to keep the window open after ejecting the disk.

Are you talking about the Finder window or the window you open when you double click the Hard drive icon on the desktop. I think it is the latter. If you unmount a drive and the window was opened with the drive you are ejecting the window will close as the files etc will be ejected. To keep the window open click on something that is not in the ejected drive window and eject the drive the window should stay open

No, if you have finder already open (I tend to have many open on different desktops when working on different documents or whatever) then the USB drives appear on the left hand panel, underneath $home, apps, docs, downloads, movies, music, pics. I normally open a finder window by clicking on the desktop and command-N (new finder window).

I'll click on the usb drive, or drag files on to it from finder. It's when I click eject beside the drive in finder that sometimes the window will close and sometimes it will stay open.

I think they have tried to copy microsoft and got it wrong. Windows gets it right every time. If a drive is opened automatically when it recognises the usb drive, then it disappears when you pull the drive out (no need for the nonsense you didn't eject error too). If you click on the drive from an already open window then that windows stay open when you eject the drive.

If the drive is selected in a finder window when ejected the window closes. If you select something else in the finder window say doc's, or app's then eject the disk the window should stay open

That's not the case. I've had the finder window on the drive and it doesn't close sometimes, changes to $home folder. And other times I have chosen another folder then the ejecting will still close that window. There is no consistency from what I see.
