Hello,

I just updated to 12.0.1 and now my NEC 4010 doesn't work.
Under previous OSX it has been possible to choose 1920x1080 with 50 or 60 Hz.
Now the only settings I am getting is 25 or 30 Hz, which the monitor doesn't accept.
Also the resolutions given in system settings are much fewer.

Prefered is to be able to do 1080 with 50 Hz.

Anyone else have experienced these kind of problems?

What Mac are you connecting the display to?
What was the previous OS X?
How is the display connected? What port / adapter / cable are you using?

If you are using an Intel Mac, then output from the AGDCDiagnose command may be useful (and more so if you can get the output from the previous OS X as well).

I am running a 2017 Intel MacBook Pro and before the upgrade I ran OSX BigSur without any problems.
I connect to a NEC Multisync LCD 4010 with a DVI from the monitor to a USB-C converter into the computer.

Before the upgrade to 12.0.1 I could select 1920x1080 50 Hz in Systemsetting/Screen.

Now I have fewer possibilities than before and when I try to select 1080p, it is only possible to select 25 or 30 Hz.

The screen cannot accept these settings and there is an alert; “Signal frequency is out of range, Please change signal timing, H: 34 Hz, V: 30 Hz”.

I have a spare MacBook Pro running Yosemite, 10.10.5, and it has no problem with selecting the resolution needed.

Now I am unsure if I have to downgrade to BigSur again, with all the trouble formating the HD and reinstalling apps, or if I should wait for some kind of fix from Apple.

I ran ABDCDiagnose and there came out a long reply.

MacRumors doesnt allow posts over 100.000 characters so I cannot show all of it, and I have to say that I dont know what to look for. - I submitt some of the output for you to see.

Unfotunatley I cannot run ABDCDiagnose on a BigSur computer as I do not have one, but I could run it from the Yosemite computer if needed.

I am running a 2017 Intel MacBook Pro and before the upgrade I ran OSX BigSur without any problems.
I connect to a NEC Multisync LCD 4010 with a DVI from the monitor to a USB-C converter into the computer.

Before the upgrade to 12.0.1 I could select 1920x1080 50 Hz in Systemsetting/Screen.

Now I have fewer possibilities than before and when I try to select 1080p, it is only possible to select 25 or 30 Hz.

The screen cannot accept these settings and there is an alert; “Signal frequency is out of range, Please change signal timing, H: 34 Hz, V: 30 Hz”.

I have a spare MacBook Pro running Yosemite, 10.10.5, and it has no problem with selecting the resolution needed.

Now I am unsure if I have to downgrade to BigSur again, with all the trouble formating the HD and reinstalling apps, or if I should wait for some kind of fix from Apple.

I ran ABDCDiagnose and there came out a long reply.

MacRumors doesnt allow posts over 100.000 characters so I cannot show all of it, and I have to say that I dont know what to look for. - I submitt some of the output for you to see.
Unfortunately, you cut info related to your NEC display from the AGDCDiagnose output.

When posting replies in a forum, it helps to familiarize yourself with all the buttons and features that the forum provides. You can put the AGDCDiagnose output into a text file, then use the finder to compress the text file into a zip file. Then attach the zip file to the post using the "Attach files" button.

Unfotunatley I cannot run ABDCDiagnose on a BigSur computer as I do not have one, but I could run it from the Yosemite computer if needed.

From what I can see so far, the DisplayPort to DVI adapter should have enough bandwidth for 1920x1080 50Hz (but you already know that since it works in different macOS version).
Status: [4 x HBR 7777] = 8.64 Gbps.
2560x1600 60Hz = 269 MHz pixel clock * 30 bpp (bits per pixel) = 8 Gbps.

The adapter you are using appears to be a Parade Technologies PS171

You could probably try any DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and use a passive HDMI to DVI adapter.

Try installing SwitchResX. Post a screenshot of the Display Information tab for the display in SwitchResX. It might have interesting info about the frequency ranges. You can override these with larger max values. In the Current Resolutions tab is a lest of supported timings (those that are not marked Scaled - sort by Scaled to move the timings to the top of the list).

Thank you for your time and you are right that I am not familiar with the website and how best to post. I will try to be more precise.



To summarize:

I have always been able to connect both my computers, before I updated to 12.0.1, to the NEC monitor, 1920x1080, without changing any settings on the computers or on the monitor.

I run Yosemite 10.10.5 on a 2009 MacBook Pro and it has never had problems in connecting to the external NEC monitor with: 1920x1080, 28 kHz, 50 Hz.

In System settings/ screen it normally allows to select: 1080i, 50 Hz. (I live in Europe)



I tried to locate the: /System/Library/Extensions/AppleGraphicsControl.kext/Contents/MacOS/AGDCDiagnose



But it is not present on the 10.10.5, and therefore I cannot submit an output txt file.

When I run the 2017 Intel MacBook Pro, upgraded to 12.0.1, system settings/screen doesn’t allow for 1080. While experimenting with the settings and resetting the monitor/computer, I sometimes can access a 1080p, but it doesn’t solve the problem.

The monitor alert that the “Signal frequency is out of range”.

The only selection I can do that turn on the monitor is the Standard resolution 1280x720.

To me it seems like SwitchResX overrule the monitor resolution and the monitor somehow remembers it, so when I connect the older computer, it cannot accept the 1080 resolution.



I am sorry if all this seems a bit confusing.

It is also for me and I try to make it as easy to understand as I can.

Finally.

The NEC monitor allows for to modes: DVI-PC and DVI-HD.



When the setting is DVI-PC the 2017 Mac is able to connect and overrule the resolution so it display 1920x1080, but the 2009 Mac can’t display in 1080.



When I change it to DVI-HD then the 2017 Mac can’t connect to the monitor, but the 2009 Mac can display in 1080.

It seems like I have some kind of work around the problem solution, although it is not optimal, and I guess I will wait future updates of the OSX, to see if the problem disappear.

Right. The earliest macOS version to include AGDCDiagnose is macOS 10.13 High Sierra.
macOS 10.15 Catalina adds DisplayDiagnose (for Apple Pro XDR displays) and mpxdiagnose (for MPX modules?).

You have selected a 1920x1080 scaled mode. I said to only look at the non-scaled modes.

SwitchResX can't overrule the monitor. Disconnect power from the monitor, wait a few seconds, then reconnect to the older computer.

Attach the AGDCDiagnose output for DVI-PC mode. It may have a 1920x1080 progressive mode in the EDID?

Maybe you could add the missing timing for each Mac using SwitchResX.
