Hi!
I just ordered myself an 06 mac pro for general use, and i want to upgrade the os (and cpu, ram...)
now, from what i read the latest os available is 10.11 through a magical boot.efi.
my mac still has the original 7300 gt cpu and probably wont work.
so, does anybody knows which is the most basic cpu that will run 10.11 with all the features enabled? something in the 70$ range... Im thinking more about an and card, as from my understanding will flash easier to enable boot screen.

Oh and what software should i use to flash it?

Thanks and sorry for being a noob I just can't find an answer anywhere.

You have a 2006 mac pro server, and want to replace the CPU?
Check with OWC what your upgrade options are perhaps?

I thought about upgrading to dual x5365, but not right now.
The thing that I really need help with is finding the right graphics card and a flashing software/guide on how to flash it. OWC sells only the 7950 and its way too expensive for me.

ATI 4870 cards are a good option on that mac they are plenty fast and most are easy to flash and can be had for 50 bucks. a free dos cd or a windows install with the ati flasher will do save the cards bios first.

here is one guide that uses the iMac updater I didn't do it this way

Can I flash to the Mac efi within ati flasher on windows?
Do you run 10.11 on your 1.1?

I just got a 2006 Mac Pro for free and put in 2x Xeon Quads 5355 for $20 and upgraded to 16 GB of ram for $15. I threw a small SSD for a boot drive in it and the thing flys. Feels nearly as fast as my rMBP and now it's my home server. Scores a 9000+ on GeekBench 3.

I currently am using a old 8800 GTX from an old gateway computer and it's working decent. I have no boot up screen but once it's to the login screen it works fine. Once I get a 1060 for my main computer and free up one of my video cards I will probably try putting my GeForce 560 in the Mac Pro.

I am running El Cap. Everything works accept handoff. However It looks like I can get a wireless/bluetooth card for $30 that could make that work too.
