USB external drive works fine for me. What Mac device are you using? Better warn my friends about this.

Had this issue on my Mac Pro and my MBP 2011. After reverting to 11.1, there is no such issue. It was not constant, but happened about 50-60% of the time, both connecting drives (would not show up on the desktop) and unmounting them.

PIA (private internet access) app refuse to connect, UDP as well as TCP. Went back to 10.11.1, now it connects without any problem.
