Just been given a factory reset MacBook Air running El Capitan. All seemed fine but suddenly when opening mail app, it briefly shows mail then crashes.
When trying to find why I came across a solution posted here Feb. 6th 2023 by Ar+ a new member.
Open Mail app while pressing Shift on keyboard, do not click on any left-side tab (inbox etc.)
Just go directly to Preferences... in Mail menu, then under Viewing tab check Use classic layout and the issue disappears.
After that you can uncheck the classic layout again and you'll be good.
this seemed to be a workaround but unfortunately for me it didn't work.
followed above solution but although mail appeared very briefly it went back to showing crash data which apparently was being sent to Apple
i know its a long shot but hopefully someone will come up with another solution.
Not happening on any other Apple device with Mail.
