El Capitan keeps restarting

Upgraded to El Capitan this morning without issue. No problems until my mac went to sleep. When trying to wake, it restarted around 7 times. Will work fine for most things now, including photoshop work. However any attempt to enter time machine or back up using time machine automatically shuts it down.

Never had this issue until this mornings update. Any thoughts? I do like the new OS, and would love to not have to take it back to Yosemite. But I do need the system to be stable and to be able to back up.

2009 Mac Pro - I too am experiencing this and I expected many people to be complaining. Since upgrading to El Crapitan my computer has forced me to enter my user password at least 30 times. This has caused total havoc, as this is a business computer. I am constantly having to redo work. I erased my hard drive and did a clean install, but the same issue is there. This is a MAJOR malfunction.

The same thing is happening to me, and can't seem to figure out what triggers this shutdown. I have narrowed it down to either related to my Time Machine doing a back up, using firefox, having a writer app in full screen or making a post here about the issue - using safari!!!

FYI, I do not use Time Machine or Firefox or full screen mode. I think this may have something to do with using the latest version of MS Office. I get many more of these when I use MS Office applications.

I am having a similar issue on my retina MacBook. Not sure it's the same - but this morning it crashed to a black screen while browsing in Safari. It took ~20 reboot attempts before I was able to successfully log in. I am trying to do a clean install now.

FWIW, I reported this issue to Apple as I experienced it on the GM as well...

Well, no luck even with a fresh install. Created a bootable usb disk, and it gives an error very shortly after starting the install. Got it into the recovery partition and downloaded the installer directly again, and it also crashes. Now just trying to reinstall back to Yosemite from Time Machine...

I'm having the same problem. Installed El Capitan on both my MacBook Air and my MacPro (Early 2009) which runs multiple monitors. Terrible instability problems with being constantly logged out and occasional crashing. Have tried multiple reboot solutions (incl. Safe Mode) and removal of all peripherals but with no success. Have to get a solution here soon!

Just zapped PRAM and still no success. Getting kicked out constantly. Help Apple!

Focusing my efforts now around eliminating extraneous start-up items (i.e.: Leap Motion controller and drive utilities) as well as secondary monitors. Seem to be finding some stability... Will continue to try to isolate.

So it seems that when I disconnected the secondary monitors from the second video card I have stability. When I reconnect them, no good... Both of my video cards are NVIDIA GeForce GT 120. Wondering if I get a different video card if that will help...

PROBLEM SOLVED

Let me clarify, my Mac Pro is not crashing and I have no problem logging in. Throughout the day -- many times -- my screen required me to log back into the computer. That is effectively a restart, as all apps must reload. In some cases, all work done is lost. On a business computer, that is a nightmare.

I use an app called Cookie. It was not allowing me to run Disk First Aid on my backup SSD drive. While troubleshooting this, I went to System preferences and started to disable everything I do not use. In the process of doing this, I FIXED the issue which requires me to log in all day. I also fixed the Cookie issue, so they may be related.

I am sorry that I cannot tell you what I changed. I had to have changed 20+ system preferences. Something in there fixed my issues.

NOTE: I too thought this issue happened more often with two monitors active. I have the stock NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 and the ATI Radeon HD 5770 upgrade card.

ALSO NOTE: I may not have fixed the problem, I may have just hidden it. I just wanted people to know that by changing system preferences, I have definitely stopped the problem from occurring.

I too am having terrible problems with my 2009 Mac Pro auto logging out within 60 secs of logging in. My MacBook Pro 2012 retina, thankfully not showing the same symptoms.... Really irritating
 
I am not sure if you read my last entry, posted above yours, but I have a very similar computer (early 2009 Mac Pro with dual monitors) and I had the exact same issue.

Like many users (I assume) I do the same things with my computer day after day. Because of this, many of the features in OSX I never use. Perhaps I should, but I don't. Consequently, I can disable many things in the System Preferences. I opened each preference window and turned off anything I do not use. This fixed the restart issue. I have not had to log into my Mac Pro in several days, and I use the computer at least 12 hours a day.

The fix is in there, but I can't tell you where. I considered turning things back on to see if the problem returns, but I am so happy the problem is fixed, I don't want to go backwards.

I tried rebooting with "alt" then with "apple + r"
controlled privileges disk, everything ok
HD is ok

The problem is on OS operating system !!!

Turn with Brute Force, i have not time----

Starting with "apple + T" fetch data and then re-install
 
I have had the issue as well making my mac unusable, but since I turned off my TM-back-up I have had fewer restarts with the following black-screen. I am really hoping for a update to el Capitan soon! - because it is so unstable on my rmbp.
 
I am running a mac desktop and it keeps restarting about every 2 days and it seems to be when I click an item in Mail. This is no good!
 
My case is very similar to @misterwilson

i dont really get the crashes, i think it did but rare. whenever i close my lid and open in back after few hours, it seems my mac has restarted and i need to login and open back the apps which has been left open :(
 
Hello Folks,

Like most on this thread I'm also experiencing this highly inconvenient and annoying problem with the upgrade, one which I hesitated with to install to begin with. The big question here is what is Apple actually doing about the problem, in respect of communicating with its customers about it and when we can all expect the problem will be fixed. Apple folks, when be the gameplay here???????

was it by any chance about iCloud? I exceeded my free limit and logged out, after upgrading I got back in (during setup it logged me back in). so now I logged out again and seems okay... no automatic sync...

actually, that did not help. I did kill my flashplayer (was tracking my mac). It is gone!
Admittedly, I have to use Chrome for html5 video and bless you, Steve Jobs! flashplayer is such a hog, anyway.

I have a similar but worse problem.

Mac Mini 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, 8Gb RAM (aftermarket Crucial 2 x 4Gb), aftermarket Crucial 512 Gb SSD running El Capitan

My Mini is continuously restarting, often without finishing the previous restart cycle.


Steps so far:

Reset PRAM and unplugged-replugged power cord. -> -> No change. Mini keeps restarting.

Disconnected all peripherals, even monitor, keyboard and mouse -> No change. Mini keeps playing reboot chord.

Re-installed original internal hard drive, running Yosemite. -> No change. Mini keeps restarting.

Removed aftermarket (Crucial) RAM and re-installed original RAM chips (2 x 2G). -> No change. Mini keeps restarting.

Re-installed aftermarket Crucial SSD. Reformatted drive and did clean system install. -> -> No change. Mini keeps restarting even during the "new install setup" cycle.


So far, the only way to keep Mini running is by "safe boot", which renders it unusable for most purposes.


Can't afford a new Mac right now. Any suggestions?

I cannot say it is fully gone (every time I post something else comes up) but after I switched off automatic time machine (backing up when it occurs to me, manually) the reboot is certainly much less frequent. I do not think I had any in the last week. I also have upgraded memory but I do not think that would be an issue. Apple replaced my HDD at one point, claiming that failed, it may have had a bad sector but am still skeptical about the analysis. Anyway, the new one made no difference it that sense but it gave me an opportunity to check the HDD wires (my MBP is '09 but is running fine). So try switching off backup. Something wants to start again when you reboot and that fails, so I would also inactivate (for now) all login items.
