Regarding daisy chained hard drives and El Capitan.

Can anyone help?
My Connected Hardware:
- Mid 2010 Mac Desktop (Intel Core), running El Capitan 10.11.6, with a Firewire 800 port.
- Time Machine hard drive (backups only) and At&T Modem.

1) Is it El Capitan or do I just need to buy a cable?
I want to:
Add/connect my 4 daisy chained external hard drives. The last in the chain has a 400 Firewire port, the iMac has an 800 port. I tried it with a Firewire 400 / USB (old) cable, but the mount took 10 minutes and only the 1st drive in the chain showed up.

2) Is a 800/800 connection a lot faster? If so, how much? I can possibly re-daisy so the 800 port is the last in the chain.

Thanks!
