El Capitan safe to use still?

Apple was still issuing security updates for El Cap as of july this year, so with a modern up-to-date browser such as FireFox 62 I'd wager that you'd be safe for some time yet.
BTW what is your reason for not moving past El-Capitan?

Make sure to use an up-to-date browser like Chrome or Firefox and be sensible with your browsing habits. Should be fine for at least the next while.
Last Sierra security update was 7/9 just like El Cap, so that suggests that El Cap is still current for security. It will be interesting to see if El Cap is updated when the next Sierra security update is tossed out by Apple.

El Capitan is done with updates now that Mojave is released. Sierra and High Sierra got Safari 12, El Capitan didn't. Also, Apple does not apply all security updates to older versions of the OS, so even now, El Capitan has more unpatched issues than Sierra and Sierra has more unpatched issues than High Sierra.
The ones they apply are the most critical ones so in that sense it is current. As I said, we'll need to wait and see if El Cap is patched come the next Sierra security update before we can say conclusively. Otherwise, it's just conjecture.
Apple's pattern hasn't changed in many years. El Capitan should be considered unsupported.
What precise date between the July release and today did this ‘unsupported’ state suddenly occur? Why that precise date?
I would say it became unsupported when Safari 12 was released for Sierra and higher, but Apple does not announce the end of support of any OS, it seems. I wouldn't be expecting to see any more security updates to El Capitan - it might get an iTunes update or two but that'll be it.
Good point on Safari. I guess I was holding out hope that El Cap would be supported for it cast many Macs adrift and those only have Win 10 or Linux as free supported options.
Yeah I can't see Apple changing their support policies. I run El Cap on a 2006 Mac Pro so havent installed a security update since last year - I only use it for basic tasks as I don't do video or audio editing or anything, so as long as I have access to an up-to-date browser, I'm happy to keep using it.
I'll probably replace it with a Linux distro in a year or so.
Yeah I still have El Cap on my iMac 2011 which can run HS. Something about El Cap is timeless that makes Sierra and High Sierra look like bare rocks.
Or Windows 10. Microsoft is cool nowadays for Mac users.
I'm a bit stuck with El Cap because my Mac Pro can't go any higher, but I do like it. It runs great, and I've found it to be snappier than High Sierra on my Macbook Pro.
Actually got Windows 7 on my Mac Pro but I'll probably upgrade it to 10 at some point. 10 is pretty crappy for privacy though so I prefer to stick with 7 for now.
Have you got an 3,1 Or 4,1 MacPro ?
These machines van run the latest versions no problem.
3,1 can use dosdude1 patcher tool, and 4,1 firmware can be updated to 5,1
